Year 2 Chair
The year 2 design studios at WSA work within the urban and rural context of Wales, beginning with themes of sustainable living through the design of social housing within the fabric of Cardiff’s terrace housing. Urban conditions studies, located in the valleys north of Cardiff, culminate in the design of a small public building and an associated public space. Through these projects, themes of the role of public space and the role of architecture in the regeneration of welsh mining communities are explored.

THE CONTEXT OF SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
This studio embraced an opportunity to work with a live project and real clients, through a proposal to redevelop the Llanfyllin Workhouse in Powys, Wales. Abandoned in 1984, the Workhouse has fallen into disrepair and was purchased in 2004 by the Llanfyllin Doydd Building Preservation Trust. The Trust aim to develop the Workhouse as an economically sustainable venue for entertainment, education, arts and social enterprise which could benefit the local and wider community. Originally constructed to house hundreds of paupers, the Workhouse grounds today host the Workhouse Festival, an annual eclectic three day music festival. We spent a week at the Workhouse, meeting owners and volunteers, and volunteering some hard labour in taking out a concrete floor in an existing building. The remaining four weeks were spent proposing landscapes, briefs, interventions, and events as potential strategies for the redevelopment of the Workhouse.
