Wheelingstone

Westray, Orkney Isles, 2004-2009

On the site of a ruined 'long-house', this project utilised siting, context and the typology of the long-house to maintain a low lying country residence nestled in the landscape. Collaborative Design Studio undertook the design and construction of this project, taking advantage of the long light of summer days at this latitude. Completed in phases, methods of construction and techniques were key factors in taking account of the adjustments required for constructing on a remote island.

Passive solar design principles were used in conjunction with a ground source heat pump serving an underfloor radiant heating system. The final stonework of the façade is now being completed with the care and enjoyment of crafting by hand.

It is a house for remoteness.
